Today I will receive no bouquet of red roses or a box of chocolates, and I could not care less. In fact, I am delighted that there will be no Valentine's Day celebration in this house. I want no part in a holiday created for the benefit of the retail industry, where couples purchase obligatory gifts for each other to appease the other's expectations, resembling a threat more than excited anticipation. Spare me from the barrage of pink and red merchandise spilling from every store in America.
Tonight I will make dinner for the two of us, and we will sit in our sparse dining room and talk about what's on our minds. We'll laugh at our cat trying to pick up hair pins with her paws, and settle into the couch while we'll read our books. I am content with this. I have my love, and his presence brings me far more joy than any pink teddy bear ever could.
